Anima is a short musical film built around the music of Thom Yorke, the Radiohead frontman. Yorke appears as himself in a dystopian setting, drifting through a world of commuters and dancers, drawn toward a mysterious woman he encounters on a subway train. Across its fifteen minutes, the film moves between the everyday and the dreamlike, with dancing crowds surrounding its central figure. It is designed to be watched at high volume.
Paul Thomas Anderson directed the film, which is the eleventh of the fifteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Phantom Thread and preceding Licorice Pizza. He also produced it with Michal Škop and Sara Murphy. Yorke leads a cast that includes featured performer Dajana Roncione and dancers Frida Dam Seidel, Joseba Yerro Izaguirre, Jean Michael Sinisterra Munoz and Takuya Fujisawa; the production credits 56 cast members and 120 crew. It was made across the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the Czech Republic, with Stillking Films, PASTEL, Ghoulardi Film Company and Froggie Production among the companies involved.
Released in June 2019, the film has an IMDb rating of 7.5 from roughly 15,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 7.3 from about 500 votes. A critics' rating of 8 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it above both audience scores.
