Short description
Halloween Kills picks up moments after the events of its 2018 predecessor. Laurie Strode, her daughter Karen and her granddaughter Allyson have left Michael Myers trapped in the burning basement of Laurie's house, and Laurie is rushed to hospital with injuries that threaten her life. She believes she has finally ended the man who has haunted her for decades, but Michael escapes the fire and resumes his killing in Haddonfield. As Laurie recovers, her family and a group of survivors of Michael's earlier attacks organize the town to hunt him down.
David Gordon Green directed the film, his eleventh of fourteen features in chronological order and the second entry in a trilogy that began with Halloween in 2018 and continued with Halloween Ends in 2022. He wrote the screenplay with Danny McBride and Scott Teems. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie, with Judy Greer as Karen, Andi Matichak as Allyson and James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle sharing the role of Michael Myers, credited as The Shape. Bill Block, Jason Blum and Malek Akkad produced.
Released in October 2021, the film cost about 20 million dollars and earned roughly 133 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 108,000 votes, while on TMDB it rates 6.4 out of 10 from close to 3,000 votes. A film critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 277 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- During the filming of the fight scene with Lindsey, played by Kyle Richards, she broke her nose. She wanted to finish the scene herself, so she only reported the injury at the end of the shooting day.
- The escaped mentally unstable individual, mistakenly identified by the crowd as Michael Myers, is the man with an umbrella from the opening scenes of the film "Halloween" (2018).
- When the police arrest Myers at the 13-minute mark of the film, he has no injuries. However, at the 5-minute mark, when other officers run to Hawkins, one of them says that Loomis shot the maniac several times. Also, at the end of the original 1978 film, Dr. Loomis shoots Myers in the chest several times, after which he falls from the balcony.
- A new mask was made for the 2018 'Halloween' film, but the artists recreated the original William Shatner mask for the opening scenes, which take place immediately after the events of the first film.
- There was considerable thought given to how to bring Dr. Loomis back into the franchise (played by Donald Pleasence in John Carpenter's 1978 horror film). Various options were considered, from using the character with only his voice heard, but never appearing on screen, to using computer technology. At one point, the filmmakers noticed that Tom Jones Jr. strongly resembled the older Pleasence. So, the role went to him – after minimal makeup work. The voice of Dr. Loomis was provided by actor Colin Mahan.
- According to director and screenwriter David Gordon Green, the filmmakers tried to find a school photo of one of Michael Myers' victims from the film 'Halloween' and came across a school photo of Bob Odenkirk, who Green thought resembled John Michael Graham. Odenkirk is even credited as Bob, although he does not appear in the film.
- At the 45-minute mark of the film, Allison places a bundle containing a knife on the hospital bed next to Laurie. When Karen enters the room at the 55-minute mark, she picks up the bundle with the knife from a chair instead.
- At the 48th minute of the film, when Tommy gets into the car, the writing on his baseball bat looks as if it were applied with a marker. However, at the 34th minute, when Vanessa runs into the bar, it can be seen that the writing was scratched into the bat.
- At the 32nd minute, when police examine the bodies of the killed firefighters, in the background one can notice that the remaining brick chimneys of the house show no signs of soot.
- At the 52nd minute of the film, when Myers begins to strangle Lindsay and she tries to pull off his mask, the car's parking lights are on. When Lindsay manages to break free and run away in the next scene, the car's hazard lights are already flashing.
- The filmmakers created a new mask for the 2018 film "Halloween" (David Gordon Green) that resembled the original, and then aged it. However, they recreated William Shatner’s original mask for the opening scenes, which take place immediately after the events of the first film.
- The film was shot with digital cameras, so special filters were used to age the footage when reshooting flashbacks from 1978.
- At the 8-minute mark of the film, you can notice that the glass front door to the Myers family home is completely intact. When Hawkins and his partner enter the house in one of the following scenes, the glass on the front door is already broken.
- According to director and screenwriter David Gordon Green, the filmmakers attempted to find a school photo of one of Michael Myers' victims from John Carpenter's classic film "Halloween" (1978) and came across a school photo of Bob Odenkirk, who Green felt resembled John Michael Graham. The copyright issue with the photo was quickly resolved, and Green was allowed to use the photo of Odenkirk instead of an actor from the original film. Odenkirk was even credited as "Bob" despite not actually appearing in the film itself.
- At the 24-minute mark, Laurie is lying on the operating table with her hair down, although during surgery, the patient's hair must be covered with a cap.
- At the 41st minute of the film, when Allison looks at the bodies of Myers' victims, a tag is visible on the corpse of Ranbir Sartain in one of the shots. The 'Place of Death' field indicates the Turkish city of Izmir, not Haddonfield, USA. Izmir is the hometown of actor Haluk Bilginer, who played Dr. Sartain.
- At the 50th minute of the film, Myers attacks Marion, Marcus, and Vanessa. When Vanessa gets out of the car with a gun, she disappears and does not help in the fight with Myers. At the 51st minute, once the killer has already dealt with her companions, Vanessa appears from somewhere in the distance and begins shooting at Myers.
- At the 64-minute mark, when Laurie learns that Myers survived, she begins ripping off her medical sensors and gets out of bed; however, the nearby monitor shows that her vital signs remain normal.
- At the 19-minute mark of the film, the amount of blood on Laurie's shoulders changes from frame to frame.
- Real firefighters appear at the beginning of the film.
- At the 36th minute, as Tommy approaches the car, the car's headlights turn off. When he hits the hood with a bat, the car's headlights are turned on again.
