Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Short description
The four mutant turtle brothers have spent their lives hidden in the sewers of New York, raised and trained by their master Splinter. Now teenagers, they want nothing more than to be accepted by the human world above and to live like ordinary adolescents. Setting out to win over the city through heroic deeds, they team up with a new friend, the journalist April O'Neil, and take on a mysterious criminal syndicate. Their plan backfires when they find themselves facing an army of mutants far beyond what they expected.
Jeff Rowe directed the film, following The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) in his filmography; a further entry in the series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2, is scheduled for 2027. Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Dan Hernandez wrote the screenplay, with Rogen, Goldberg and James Weaver producing. The voice cast includes Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu and Brady Noon as the four turtles, alongside Ayo Edebiri as April O'Neil and Maya Rudolph as Cynthia Utrom.
Made on a budget of about 70 million US dollars, the film went on to gross roughly 182 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from around 78,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 7.2, based on a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 253 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Superfly – the main villain of the cartoon – and Baxter Stockman were supposed to be the same character; according to the original idea, Stockman was supposed to mutate into a fly in the film.
- The actors voiced their characters working all together, not individually as is usually done. Up to seven actors were in the recording studio at the same time. Working together allowed the actors to play off each other and improvise.
- Originally, Shredder was in the script, but it was decided to remove him from the plot because the director and screenwriter Jeff Rowe wanted the main antagonist to be a mutant who sympathized with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, making it easier to corrupt them.
- Ice Cube agreed to voice the mutant fly named Superfly because he liked the name and because he watches Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons with his son.
- In some scenes, Donatello is depicted wearing a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure-style hood from the 2012-2022 series. This detail was added because director Jeff Rowe asked the actors at the outset what anime references they would like to include in the film. The JoJo's reference was suggested by Mika Abbey, who also voiced Donatello.
