Short description
Hutch Mansell is an ordinary suburban husband and father, so unremarkable that people barely notice him. One night two burglars enter his home, and he chooses not to fight back, hoping to keep the incident from escalating. The decision costs him: his teenage son is disappointed, and his wife withdraws further. What follows is the release of a long-suppressed capacity for violence, which drags Hutch back toward a past he had tried to leave behind and puts him on a collision course with a dangerous adversary.
Nobody was directed by Ilya Naishuller, the second of the three features he has directed, following Hardcore Henry and preceding Heads of State. Derek Kolstad wrote the screenplay, and David Leitch, Bob Odenkirk and Kelly McCormick produced. Odenkirk stars as Hutch, with Aleksey Serebryakov, Connie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Michael Ironside and Colin Salmon in supporting roles. The film runs 91 minutes.
Made for about 16 million USD, it took roughly 58 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from around 388,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.9/10 from more than 8,700 votes, indicating a widely seen film that audiences rate favourably. A critics' rating of 7/10 from 288 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broad agreement rather than a sharp divide.
What's left behind the scenes
- The idea of Hutch hitting his head against the handrail at the beginning of the bus scene came from Bob Odenkirk himself, to emphasize that this is not just another movie hero.
- The tattoo on Hutch’s arm (seven of spades and two of clubs) is statistically the worst possible hand a player can be dealt at the start of a poker game (referring to Texas Hold'em – the most popular variation of this card game), as they are the two lowest-ranking cards, a straight cannot be made between them (there are four cards between two and seven), and they are of different suits. Therefore, when these two cards are dealt, they should be immediately discarded, because winning is practically impossible.
- The film's release was delayed four times due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was initially scheduled for August 18, 2020, but was postponed to February 26, 2021, then moved to February 19, and again to February 26, 2021. Eventually, the film was released on March 26, 2021.
