Marry Me
Short description
Marry Me centres on Kat Valdez, a pop superstar whose highly publicised relationship with fellow singer Bastian is about to culminate in a wedding staged as a live spectacle for her fans. Moments before the ceremony, she learns he has been unfaithful, and on impulse she picks a stranger out of the crowd, a divorced maths teacher named Charlie Gilbert, and marries him instead. The two come from entirely separate worlds, and much of the film follows their attempts to work out whether the arrangement can become something real.
Kat Coiro directed the romantic comedy, working from a screenplay by John Rogers, Harper Dill and Tami Sagher. It was her second feature, following A Case of You in 2013 and preceding You, Me & Tuscany in 2026. Jennifer Lopez, who plays Kat, also produced through Nuyorican Productions alongside Rogers and Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Owen Wilson appears as Charlie. Maluma plays Bastian, with John Bradley, Sarah Silverman and Chloe Coleman in supporting roles. The production involved 102 credited cast members and 129 credited crew.
Released in February 2022, the film runs 112 minutes and was made for about 23 million US dollars, going on to take roughly 44 million worldwide. Audiences have been more receptive than critics: on IMDb it holds 6.1 out of 10 from around 48,000 votes, on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from over a thousand votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.7 out of 10 from 216 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma had to film one scene without leaving their homes to complete the film. According to Lopez, her former partner Alex Rodriguez and her children performed the duties of the film crew.
- Cat's wedding dress is the work of renowned Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad. Jennifer Lopez chose it herself after seeing it on the runway. The dress weighed around 43 kg, and it was so difficult to wear that Lopez sustained a hip injury during the long shoot.
- During the first joint press conference with Charlie, Kate mentions their shared intention to keep their surnames after the wedding. Unlike Latin America and Europe (with the exception of the UK regardless of 'Brexit'), it is customary in the US for a woman to take her husband's surname after marriage, while in other countries (Mexico, Argentina, Spain, etc.) each person, regardless of gender, is given two surnames at birth – the father's first surname and the mother's first surname, which does not change upon marriage.
