Short description
Sam Lombardo is a popular high school guidance counselor in the wealthy Florida community of Blue Bay. When Kelly Van Ryan, a student from one of the town's most influential families, accuses him of rape after he rejects her advances, his life unravels: he is suspended from his job, shunned by neighbors and forced to seek a lawyer. A second student, Suzie Toller, then comes forward with a similar claim, turning the case into a scandal that divides the community. Detective Ray Duquette investigates, and it gradually becomes clear that the accusations are part of a larger scheme rather than a straightforward crime.
John McNaughton directed the film from a screenplay by Stephen Peters, with Steven A. Jones and Rodney Liber producing for Columbia Pictures and Mandalay Entertainment. It sits between Mad Dog and Glory and Condo Painting in McNaughton's filmography. Matt Dillon plays Lombardo, Neve Campbell and Denise Richards play the two accusers, and Kevin Bacon appears as Duquette, with Theresa Russell and Bill Murray in supporting roles.
Made for about 20 million dollars, the film took roughly 67 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 rating from around 141,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.4 from a much smaller base of about 2,000. A critics' score of 6 out of 10, drawn from 120 reviews, places professional opinion close to the audience average.
What's left behind the scenes
- Robert Downey Jr. was offered the role of Sam Lombard, but he declined it.
- Bill Murray's character only appears for 20 minutes of screen time.
- Even in the erotic scenes, Neve Campbell did not appear nude – her contract included a corresponding clause.
- Before filming the scene on the river, a lighting technician was checking the spotlights and noticed a human corpse. The police arrived and moved it to the bank so it wouldn't be caught on camera. After the scene was filmed, the police pulled the body out of the river.
- The film ranked third on MadeMan.Com's list of the best lesbian scenes in cinema.
- Director John McNaughton said he removed a scene in which Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon bathe together, as he did not want any homosexual undertones in the film.
- During the television broadcast, all lesbian scenes between Kelly and Suzie were removed from the film.
- In an interview, Bacon stated that his contract did not include a clause regarding nudity, and since he was a producer of the film, how could the actor sue himself.
