In late-1990s New York, Joanna, an aspiring writer, takes a job as an assistant at a literary agency run by the formidable Margaret. The agency represents J.D. Salinger, who lives reclusively away from the city, and Joanna's duties include handling the voluminous fan mail sent to him. Where the agency's practice is to send a standard reply, Joanna begins answering readers personally, a decision that complicates her position with Margaret and pushes her toward finding her own voice.

Philippe Falardeau directed and wrote the screenplay, following Monsieur Lazhar, The Good Lie and Chuck, with Lovely Day arriving later in his filmography.
