The Miracle of Marcelino tells the story of a baby abandoned at the door of a Franciscan monastery in nineteenth-century Spain, after a long war. The monks try to find him a family, but their efforts come to nothing, and the boy, named Marcelino, grows up among them. The brothers care for him and give him lessons, yet he remains lonely and longs for the mother he has never known. In the monastery attic he discovers a crucifix, and he begins talking to the figure on it and bringing it bread and wine from the kitchen.
The film was directed by Ladislao Vajda, its middle entry among the features listed for him, arriving between Spanish Round and Uncle Hyacynth. Pablito Calvo plays Marcelino, with Rafael Rivelles as the Father Superior, Antonio Vico as Fray Puerta, Juan Calvo as Fray Papilla, José Marco Davó as Pascual and José Nieto as the Civil Guard Commander. It is a Spanish-Italian production running 91 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.2 from around 3,000 votes, and on TMDB it stands at 7.4 from roughly 300 votes. Both audiences are close in their assessment, and the vote counts point to a title that continues to draw viewers decades after its 1955 release.
