The Spring Outside the Fence

Two close friends, the rebellious Li Lin and the reserved Wu Ai-hua, grow up in a military dependents' village where they both develop feelings for a mutual childhood friend, a pilot named He Kang. Following his death in a plane crash, the women leave their hometown for Taipei to escape the painful memories. There, they find work as an accountant and a hostess, catering to American soldiers visiting from Vietnam. While in the city, they encounter Michael, a flight instructor from America. Despite his persistent romantic advances and a marriage proposal, Li Lin cannot move past her grief for He Kang and turns him down. After experiencing different life paths, the two women eventually return to the village of their youth to reflect on their shared history.

This 1985 Taiwanese drama was written and directed by Li Youning. The production was handled by Tomson (Hong Kong) Films Co., Ltd. and produced by Pin Hsu and Chu Yen-ping. The film has a total runtime of 112 minutes.
