Antebellum

Antebellum follows Veronica Henley, a successful author and sociologist whose work examines the denial of civil rights to Black Americans. Devoted to her husband Nick and daughter Kennedi, she is suddenly trapped in a terrifying reality that forces her to question her past, present and future. As she searches for a way out, she discovers a connection to Eden, a young enslaved woman from the Civil War era. The film is a horror story about a woman trying to survive and understand the world she has fallen into.

The film was released in September 2020 and was directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, who also wrote the screenplay. It stars Janelle Monáe in the lead dual role, alongside Eric Lange, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons and Gabourey Sidibe. It was produced by Lionsgate and QC Entertainment with a budget of 15 million dollars, and its worldwide box office came to about 8 million dollars, a modest return against its cost.

Audience response has been mixed. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 out of 10 from around 32,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.3 out of 10 from roughly a thousand votes, while the film critics' rating stands lower at 4.8 out of 10 from 205 reviews.
