The Assistant

The Assistant follows Jane, a recent college graduate who dreams of becoming a film producer and lands what appears to be a dream job as a junior assistant to a powerful entertainment executive. Her days are filled with the ordinary tasks of the role: making coffee, refilling the photocopier, ordering lunch, arranging travel and greeting new employees. Over the course of a single working day, she becomes increasingly aware of the abuse running through her workplace, and she must decide whether to stay silent along with everyone else or act on what she has come to understand.

Kitty Green wrote and directed the film, her second feature after the documentary Casting JonBenet and before The Royal Hotel. Julia Garner plays Jane, with Matthew Macfadyen as Wilcock, Makenzie Leigh as Ruby, Kristine Froseth as Sienna, Jonny Orsini as Male Assistant 2 and Noah Robbins as Male Assistant 1. James Schamus, Scott Macaulay and Ross Jacobson produced; 44 cast members and 136 crew members are credited.

Released in January 2020 and running 88 minutes, the film is an American drama that took in about 1 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 29,000 votes, while on TMDB it also sits at 6.3 from around 545 votes. A film critics' rating of 7.8 out of 10 from 245 reviews places it clearly above those audience scores.
