The Bad Guys
Short description
A crew of animal criminals consisting of Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Shark, Mr. Piranha, and Ms. Tarantula are captured after a history of high-profile heists. To avoid prison, Mr. Wolf arranges a deal where the group pretends to reform into law-abiding citizens under the guidance of Professor Marmalade. While the gang initially intends to fake their transformation, Mr. Wolf discovers a personal desire for acceptance. The group must then decide if they will truly change their ways when a new villain threatens their city.
Directed by Pierre Perifel, this project is the second film in his career, following The Building and preceding The Bad Guys 2. The screenplay was written by Etan Cohen, with Rebecca Huntley, Damon Ross, and Patrick Hughes serving as producers. The voice cast features Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, and Richard Ayoade.
Produced in the United States by DreamWorks Animation, dentsu, and Scholastic Entertainment, the movie had a budget of 80 million USD and earned 250 million USD at the worldwide box office. On IMDb, it holds a rating of 6.9/10 based on 79,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a score of 7.5/10 from 2,682 votes. Film critics gave the movie a rating of 6.9/10 from 175 reviews, which aligns with the audience score on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- When the Wolf suggests that everyone pretend to be good guys, the Shark tells a story about a brother who had an anchor fall on his head. This is a reference to a previous project from 'DreamWorks Animation' called 'Shark Tale' (2004), which features the shark brothers Frankie (who dies when an anchor falls on him) and Lenny (a good guy who pretends to be bad for a while).
- The hundred-dollar bills shown in the film feature a portrait of 'DreamWorks Animation' President Marjorie Cohn.
- The Wolf jokingly asks the Snake if he can hear colors and see sounds. In reality, snakes have an excellent sense of smell and can perfectly sense scents in the air. On the other hand, they are deprived of hearing, but they can feel vibrations, including those produced by sounds. When the Snake 'listens' to the safe while it is being opened, he is actually feeling the vibrations produced by the lock mechanism.
- The dance scene between Wolf and Diana was choreographed by a professional dancer.
