25 Watts follows three friends in Montevideo over the course of a single day. Javi, Seba and Leche drift through their neighbourhood, avoiding work, study and any kind of commitment, passing the time smoking, drinking beer and killing hours together as a Sunday approaches. The film observes a day in which one of them has exams, another has romantic troubles, and the third stumbles into odd encounters, while the question of what they intend to do with their lives hangs over everything. Emphasising character over plot, it is a low-key comic drama about young men marking time.
The film is the feature debut of Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll, who wrote the screenplay together and went on to direct Whisky. It belongs to a small wave of Uruguayan cinema that drew international attention around the turn of the millennium. Daniel Hendler plays Leche, with Jorge Temponi as Javi and Alfonso Tort as Seba; Walter Reyno appears as Javi's boss, Don Héctor, and Valentín Rivero and Damián Barrera are also in the credited cast of twenty-two.
Made by Taxi Films, Ctrl Z Films and Imágenes (Uy) and running 94 minutes, 25 Watts was released in January 2001. It has a modest following rather than a wide one: on TMDB it holds a rating of 6.5 out of 10 from 36 votes, a small sample suggesting a niche audience. The film sits at the start of the directing duo's short filmography, before the more widely seen Whisky.
