The Last Voyage of the Demeter

The Last Voyage of the Demeter follows the crew of a merchant sailing ship chartered to carry a private cargo of unmarked wooden crates from the Carpathian region to London. During the long sea crossing, strange events begin to afflict the vessel. A fearsome presence stalks those on board each night, and the frightened sailors attempt to survive the voyage as their numbers dwindle. The story is drawn from a single chapter of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula, the captain's log of the Demeter, and André Øvredal directs a cast led by Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, David Dastmalchian, Liam Cunningham and Javier Botet.

The film sits sixth among the features Øvredal has directed, between Mortal and Passenger, and it was written by Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz, with Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Bradley J. Fischer producing. It was a co-production involving Germany, the United Kingdom, India and the United States. Against a budget of roughly 45 million dollars, it took in about 22 million worldwide, a return well short of its cost.

Reception was middling on both sides. Critics gave it 5.7 out of 10 from 202 reviews, while audiences were slightly warmer: 6.1 on IMDb from 70,000 votes and 6.7 on TMDB from a much smaller pool of just over two thousand.
