The Kangaroo Chronicles
Short description
A talking kangaroo moves in with Marc-Uwe, an artist living in Berlin. The kangaroo is a communist, and the pair form an unlikely household. Their neighbourhood is soon threatened when a right-wing property developer tears down much of the area to build a headquarters for an international nationalist movement. The kangaroo devises a plan to stop him, then another when the first fails, and yet another after that.
The film is a German comedy directed by Dani Levy, whose earlier features include I'm The Father and My Führer, with Berlin, I Love You preceding it. Marc-Uwe Kling wrote the screenplay, adapting his own stories, and voices the kangaroo, while Dimitrij Schaad plays Marc-Uwe. Rosalie Thomass, Henry Hübchen, Adnan Maral and Tim Seyfi appear in supporting roles. The production involved 34 credited cast members and 188 credited crew, and was made by X Filme Creative Pool, ZDF, ARRI Media and Trixter Film.
Released in March 2020, the film runs 92 minutes and took in about 5 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.2 from roughly 3,600 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.7 from around 152 votes, indicating a modest audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- The character played by Henry Hübchen is a member of the fictional political party “Alternative zur Demokratie” (Alternative for Democracy, or Add). This is a parody of the right-wing populist “Alternative für Deutschland,” or AfD (Alternative for Germany). Therefore, doubles of Marine Le Pen, Geert Wilders, and Nigel Farage can be noticed among the guests at the presentation.
- The final scene (shown after the credits), in which the kangaroo says that it is not at all necessary for him to have the last word, is a faithful adaptation to the screen of the finale of the original book, which served as the literary source for the script. The last page of the book contains only one line stating that it is not necessary for the kangaroo to have the last word.
- At the end of the film, there is a conversation with a penguin – the new owner of the house. This character moves in at the end of the original book and appears in the book's sequels – “Das Knguru-Manifest” and “Die Knguru-Offenbarung,” in which the penguin and kangaroo fight each other.
