Lumière, Le Cinéma!

This documentary explores the early days of cinema through the work of Auguste and Louis Lumière. It features over one hundred restored short films, including famous pieces and previously unseen footage. The film examines how the Lumière brothers and their team utilized the cinematograph to develop early techniques in framing and staging for both fictional stories and short documentaries about exotic and everyday life.

Directed and written by Thierry Frémaux, this project serves as a follow-up to his 2016 film Lumière!. Produced in France by Sorties d'Usine Productions and Institut Lumière, the documentary features Thierry Frémaux as a narrator, alongside appearances by Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Coppola, Bertrand Tavernier, and narrator Valerio Mastandrea.

The film was presented at the 42nd Turin Film Festival and the 72nd San Sebastian International Film Festival. With a runtime of 104 minutes, it has received a rating of 7.1 on TMDB based on 16 votes.
