SLC Punk
Short description
SLC Punk follows Stevo and his friend Bob, two young men in Salt Lake City during the mid-1980s who embrace punk culture as a way of rejecting the conservative values around them. Stevo, whose father is a former hippie turned successful lawyer, faces pressure to attend Harvard Law School, while he and Bob drift through parties, concerts and confrontations with the city's various youth scenes, questioning how to stay true to themselves inside a society they distrust.
James Merendino wrote and directed the film, his second feature after Terrified, with Trespassing following in 2004. Matthew Lillard plays Stevo, Michael A. Goorjian plays Bob, and the cast also includes Annabeth Gish, Jennifer Lien, Christopher McDonald and Devon Sawa, with 42 credited performers and 46 credited crew members.
Released in 1998, the film runs 97 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 36,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 from just over 450 votes, indicating a modest but durable following. The critics' rating of 5.7 from 34 reviews sits below both audience scores, suggesting viewers have responded to the film more warmly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, it was assumed that Matthew Lillard would simply lighten his hair for the role of Steve. During the procedure, however, hydrogen peroxide burned the actor's scalp, leaving a scar. They only managed to hide it by dyeing his hair blue.
- When a character turns off the camera in the shopping mall and says, "Anarchy in the UK," it is the voice of director James Merendino. His voice was dubbed over the actor's because he didn't like how the actor delivered the line.
- The scene in Steve's parents' living room, where they try to convince him to go to Harvard, was filmed in the home of the film's director, James Merendino's father.
- Matthew Lillard claimed he could only play the scene of discovering Bob's body by being alone on set, and that he was only able to cry by thinking about his father.
- The apocalyptic landscape that appears behind Sandy during her conversation with Steve was “borrowed” from James Cameron’s action film *Terminator 2: Judgment Day* (1991).
