Short description
Sally and Gillian Owens grow up in a family of witches, raised by their eccentric aunts in a house full of spell books. A curse hangs over the Owens women: any man who falls in love with one of them is doomed to die young. Sally tries to leave the magic behind and live an ordinary life, while Gillian embraces her powers and takes up with a drifter named Jimmy Angelov. When Jimmy dies, the sisters attempt a spell to bring him back, and the ritual goes wrong, releasing something harmful that endangers the family. A local policeman, Gary Hallet, investigating Jimmy's disappearance, grows suspicious of the sisters as they try to set things right.
Griffin Dunne directed the film, his second feature after Addicted to Love (1997), from a screenplay by Adam Brooks, Akiva Goldsman and Robin Swicord. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play Sally and Gillian, with Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as Aunt Frances and Aunt Jet, Goran Visnjic as Jimmy and Aidan Quinn as Gary. Produced by Denise Di Novi among others, it cost about 75 million dollars and took roughly 94 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from over 106,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8/10 from a smaller number of votes, while the critics' rating stands lower at 4.9/10 from 101 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- An entire Owens house was built for the filming: a huge set, completely artificial (even the flowers on the lawns were made of silk). After filming, the set was dismantled.
- When asked why actresses so strikingly different in appearance were chosen for the roles of the two sisters, director Griffin Dunne replied that he had conducted special research into the history of witches and found that witch sisters never looked alike.
- Sandra Bullock claims that during the filming of the domestic sabbath scene, all four actresses actually got drunk (drinking tequila brought by Kidman).
- According to the beliefs of many peoples, death can take the form of a large black dog. Therefore, one can notice that a large black dog follows Michael, the husband of Sandra Bullock's character, closely on the day of his death.
- The film is based on Alice Hoffman's book "Practical Magic" (also known as "Simple Wonders") (1995).
