The Exorcism follows Anthony Miller, an actor whose career and personal life have been damaged by addiction. Newly out of rehab and hoping to rebuild his relationship with his estranged daughter, Lee, he takes a leading role in a supernatural horror production about an exorcism. As shooting continues, his behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, and Lee cannot tell whether he is returning to old habits or whether something else on set is affecting him.
The film is directed by Joshua John Miller and M.A. Fortin, who also wrote the screenplay. Miller had previously directed one other feature, and he and Fortin had worked together as a writing team. Russell Crowe stars as Anthony, with Ryan Simpkins as Lee, alongside Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg and Adrian Pasdar. It was produced by Kevin Williamson, Bill Block and Ben Fast for Miramax and Outerbanks Entertainment, with a budget of 22 million dollars.
Released in May 2024, the film took about 13 million dollars worldwide, less than its production cost. On IMDb it holds 4.2 out of 10 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 5 out of 10 from around 460 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 125 reviews places critical and audience responses close together.
