Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

Set in New York a year after the September 11 attacks, this drama follows eleven-year-old Oskar Schell, an inventive and unusually bright boy whose father died in the World Trade Center. While going through his father's belongings, Oskar finds a key and becomes convinced it is a message meant for him. He sets out across the city's five boroughs to find the lock it opens, meeting a wide range of people along the way, many of whom are carrying their own grief from the same disaster. His mother watches from a distance as he struggles to hold on to his connection with his father.

Stephen Daldry directed the film, the fourth in a run that began with Billy Elliot in 2000 and continued through The Hours and The Reader. Eric Roth wrote the screenplay, Scott Rudin produced, and the cast includes Tom Hanks as Oskar's father, Sandra Bullock as his mother, and Thomas Horn as Oskar, with Viola Davis, John Goodman and Jeffrey Wright in supporting roles. The production had a budget of 40 million dollars and took about 55 million dollars worldwide.
