Corpo Celeste

Marta, thirteen years old, has grown up in Switzerland and now returns with her mother and older sister to Reggio Calabria, the city in southern Italy where she was born. Independent and curious, she enrols in catechism classes at a local parish to prepare for confirmation. What she finds there, including games and religious pop songs, does not match her interest in faith, and she struggles to settle into her new surroundings. The parish priest, Don Mario, is preoccupied with elections within the clergy, while the town itself feels bleak to her. Her difficulty fitting in plays out against the changes of growing up.

Corpo Celeste is a drama directed and written by Alice Rohrwacher, and it was her first feature. The cast is led by Yle Vianello as Marta, with Salvatore Cantalupo as Don Mario, Pasqualina Scuncia as Santa, Anita Caprioli as Rita, Renato Carpentieri as Don Lorenzo and Maria Trunfio as Deborah, among twenty credited performers. It was produced by Carlo Cresto-Dina, Jacques Bidou and Marianne Dumoulin, and made as an Italian, French and Swiss co-production.

The film was released in 2011 and runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 2,500 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.9 out of 10 from about 109 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 20 reviews places it close to the audience scores. Rohrwacher went on to direct The Wonders, 9×10 Ninety, Happy as Lazzaro, Le Pupille, La Chimera and An Urban Allegory.
