First Knight is a retelling of the Arthurian legend centred on a love triangle. Lancelot, a skilled but rootless swordsman, arrives at Camelot and enters the service of King Arthur. He falls for Guinevere, the Lady of Leonesse, who has agreed to marry Arthur so that his protection will shield her small realm from the raids of the renegade prince Malagant. Torn between duty to the king who knighted him and his feelings for the queen, Lancelot must decide where his loyalty lies, while Malagant's aggression threatens Camelot itself.
The film was directed by Jerry Zucker, his fifth feature after Airplane!, Top Secret!, Ruthless People and Ghost, and the screenplay is by William Nicholson. Sean Connery plays Arthur, Richard Gere plays Lancelot, Julia Ormond plays Guinevere and Ben Cross plays Malagant, with Liam Cunningham, Christopher Villiers and others filling out the court. It was a large production, costing about 75 million dollars and taking roughly 128 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds 6 out of 10 from around 82,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from about 1,400 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 47 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores, though all three measures point to a middling reception rather than outright rejection.
