Ten-year-old Laure has just moved with her family to a new neighbourhood on the outskirts of Paris, where she spends the summer days playing outdoors with local children. Because of her short hair and the way she dresses, a girl her age named Lisa takes her for a boy, and Laure goes along with it. She introduces herself as Mickaël, joins the group's games, and becomes close to Lisa, keeping the new identity hidden from her parents and her younger sister Jeanne. As the friendship with Lisa deepens and the start of the school year approaches, the divide between the two parts of her life becomes harder to hold.
Céline Sciamma wrote and directed this French drama, her second feature after Water Lilies and the second of the six films she has directed to date. Zoé Héran plays Laure and Mickaël, with Malonn Lévana as Jeanne, Jeanne Disson as Lisa, Sophie Cattani and Mathieu Demy as the parents, and Rayan Boubekri as Rayan. Bénédicte Couvreur produced, and the budget was about 1 million USD.
The film took roughly the same amount at the worldwide box office as it cost to make, a modest return typical of a small French production, though it found a wide audience on home viewing. On IMDb it holds 7.3/10 from 770 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.8/10 from 73 reviews places it higher with reviewers than with the general public.
