Set in mid-20th century Europe, this drama blends fantasy and horror elements. The story follows Albert, a man hired to care for a young girl named Mia, who possesses teeth made of ice. Mia lives in total seclusion within an apartment where the shutters remain closed. Their structured daily routine is monitored by a figure known as the Master, who checks on the child via telephone. The stability of their lives is disrupted when Albert is ordered to prepare Mia to leave the apartment and travel to Paris.
Directed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic, this production is the third film in her career, following Innocence and Evolution and preceding The Ice Tower. The screenplay was written by Hadzihalilovic and Geoff Cox. The cast features Paul Hilton as Albert and Romane Hemelaers as Mia, with supporting roles played by Romola Garai, Alex Lawther, Peter van den Begin, and Anastasia Robin. A co-production between Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France, the film was released on June 15, 2022.
Audience reception is mixed, with a rating of 5.3 on IMDb from 1,800 votes and 5.5 on TMDB from 71 votes. Film critics gave the movie a higher rating of 6.4 based on 47 reviews.
