Prince Valiant is a young Viking prince whose father, a king, has been driven from his throne. Hoping to train as a knight and eventually win back his father's kingdom, Valiant travels to the court of King Arthur in Camelot. There he becomes squire to the knight Sir Gawain and meets Princess Aleta, while a knight in black armour and the treacherous Sir Brack work against him.
The 1954 production was directed by Henry Hathaway, the ninth of the eighteen films he directed in chronological order, following Niagara and preceding Woman Obsessed. Dudley Nichols wrote the screenplay and Robert L. Jacks produced it for 20th Century Fox, with a budget of 3 million dollars. Robert Wagner plays the title role, Janet Leigh appears as Princess Aleta, and James Mason plays Sir Brack. Sterling Hayden is Sir Gawain, Victor McLaglen is Boltar, and Debra Paget plays Ilene. The film adapts the comic strip character created by Hal Foster, set in a world of Viking longships and Arthurian chivalry.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.2 from around 3,300 votes, and on TMDB it holds a 6.1 from a much smaller number of votes, suggesting a modest but steady level of interest rather than wide enthusiasm. It runs 100 minutes and mixes action and adventure with romance.
