What's left behind the scenes
- In total, 50,000 rounds of ammunition, 300 kilograms of TNT, and 600 kilograms of explosives were used, and in 10 instances, 40% dynamite was required for filming battle scenes.
- Audie Murphy initially declined the possibility of portraying himself in the film, as he did not want people to think he was trying to profit from his role as a war hero. Murphy originally suggested to his friend Tony Curtis that he play the part instead.
- Some of the battle scenes were later used in another Universal studio film, 'The Young Lions' (1967).
- The film is credited with popularizing the term 'Dogface.' 'Dogface' is a term used to describe infantry soldiers of the US Army (often during the WWII years). Additionally, the film features a song titled 'The Dogface Soldier'.
- In the DVD commentary, David Morrell, author of the book 'First Blood,' cites Audie Murphy as the inspiration for his character John Rambo. In the film 'Rambo IV' (2007), Sylvester Stallone's character eliminates enemy soldiers using a .50 caliber machine gun mounted on a vehicle, much like Audie Murphy does at the end of this film.
