Short description
Luther Whitney is an experienced burglar who breaks into the Washington mansion of a wealthy philanthropist. Hidden behind a two-way mirror, he watches the homeowner's wife arrive with the President of the United States. What begins as an encounter turns violent, and the woman is killed by security agents who then cover up the death. Whitney escapes with evidence that could expose the President, and he soon finds himself pursued both by police investigating the killing and by agents determined to silence the only witness.
Clint Eastwood directed and stars in this political crime thriller, adapted by screenwriter William Goldman from David Baldacci's novel. It is the nineteenth of the forty films Eastwood has directed, following The Bridges of Madison County and preceding Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Gene Hackman plays President Richmond, with Ed Harris as a detective, Laura Linney as Whitney's estranged daughter, and Judy Davis and Scott Glenn in supporting roles. Eastwood also produced through Malpaso Productions alongside Karen S. Spiegel, with Columbia Pictures and Castle Rock Entertainment.
Made for about 50 million dollars, the film took in roughly the same amount worldwide during its theatrical run. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 65,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.7, based on far fewer votes. A critics' score of 5.9 from 57 reviews places it somewhat below the audience ratings.

- Clint Eastwood's punctuality and organizational skills as a director allowed filming to be completed three weeks ahead of schedule, saving between two and four million dollars.
- The director's daughters, Kimber Eastwood (née Kimber Tunis) and Alison Eastwood, appeared in cameo roles. Kimber's appearance in the cast was met with surprise, as Eastwood had never spoken about her to outsiders or acknowledged her existence. One way or another, Eastwood still avoids talking about her publicly, but her appearance in the film under her father's surname signifies, if only indirectly, a recognition.
- The castle building shown at the beginning of the film is located in Baltimore County, Maryland, USA. It houses a private middle school. The paintings on the walls and carpets that the viewer sees were brought in by the film crew. They were left to the school after filming was completed.
