Short description

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge is an animated action fantasy film set in a world of rival realms. The sorcerer Shang Tsung presides over a fighting tournament held once in a generation, and its outcome will decide the fate of Earthrealm. The story centres on Hanzo Hasashi, whose family is killed by the mercenary Sub-Zero. Cast into the Netherrealm, he accepts service to the sinister Quan Chi in return for a chance at vengeance, and is reborn as Scorpion. Meanwhile, Lord Raiden assembles a group of elite fighters to defend humanity: the Shaolin monk Liu Kang, Special Forces officer Sonya Blade, and action star Johnny Cage. They must overcome Shang Tsung's gladiators from Outworld to claim the tournament.

The film is based on the video game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. It is directed by Ethan Spaulding, who had previously directed several animated DC and Scooby-Doo features, including Batman: Assault on Arkham and Son of Batman; this is the tenth film in that run of his listed credits and the first of three Mortal Kombat Legends titles he directed, followed by Battle of the Realms in 2021 and Cage Match in 2023. Jeremy Adams wrote the screenplay, Rick Morales produced, and the voice cast includes Patrick Seitz as Scorpion, Jennifer Carpenter as Sonya Blade, Joel McHale as Johnny Cage and Steve Blum as Sub-Zero.

The film runs 80 minutes. It was made by Warner Bros. Animation. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from around 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it scores 8.1 out of 10 from roughly 1,500 ratings, indicating a well-liked title among those who watched it, with a larger IMDb sample settling somewhat lower.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In one scene, rivals compete with each other in breaking anvils. This is a reference to the 'Test Your Might' mini-games in the 'Mortal Kombat' franchise games, where participants test their strength on inanimate materials of increasing strength – wood, stone, steel, etc.
  • The scorpion in the WB company logo at the beginning appeared thanks to producer Rick Morales.
