Maidaan is a Hindi-language sports drama based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, the coach and manager widely credited with shaping Indian football. The film follows his work with the national team across a decade in which the side established itself on the international stage, covering the years from 1952 to 1962, and the pressures he faced in building and sustaining that side.
Ajay Devgn plays Rahim, with Priyamani as his wife Saira. Gajraj Rao, Baharul Islam, Rudranil Ghosh and Ishtiyak Khan appear in supporting roles, and the production credits 71 cast members in total. Amit Sharma directed, working from a screenplay by Saiwyn Quadras; Boney Kapoor, Shariq Patel and Akash Chawla produced for Zee Studios, Bayview Projects and FreshLime Films. The film runs 181 minutes and was released in April 2024. It is Sharma's second feature as director, following Lust Stories 2 in 2023.
Made for a budget of around 20 million USD, the film found a favourable audience: on IMDb it holds 7.9/10 from roughly 23,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8/10, though from a much smaller base of 24 votes. Critics were less convinced, giving it 5.7/10 across 11 reviews, a clear gap between professional and viewer response.
