• While preparing to work on the film, director and screenwriter Gareth Edwards visited a virtual reality studio, where he saw a poster on the wall explaining the process of making films. Edwards asked why this poster with an explanation of elementary things was there, and was very surprised to hear in response that the poster was almost 100 years old. Edwards then decided to change the filming concept: without a green screen and focus on on-location filming, using smaller cameras, and using low-budget filmmaking methods, adding science fiction elements later.
• Gareth Edwards wrote the role specifically for John David Washington after seeing him in the thriller “Monsters and Men”.
• Benedict Wong was cast in one of the roles, but he declined due to prior commitments, and Ken Watanabe was cast instead.
• On the airport departure board, “Scarrif” is listed as one of the final destinations. This was the name of one of the planets in Edwards’ previous film – “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”.
