The Creator
Short description
Set in a future where humanity is at war with artificial intelligence, the story follows Joshua, a former special forces agent struggling with the loss of his wife. He is recruited to track and eliminate the Creator, the elusive architect behind advanced AI. The mission focuses on a mysterious weapon developed by the Creator that has the potential to end the conflict but could also destroy the human race. During the operation, Joshua and his team discover that this weapon is actually an AI in the form of a young child.
The film was directed by Gareth Edwards, following his work on End Day, Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and preceding Jurassic World Rebirth. Edwards also co-wrote the screenplay with Chris Weitz. The movie stars John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Allison Janney, Ken Watanabe, and Sturgill Simpson.
Produced in the United States and Canada, the project had a budget of 80 million USD and earned 104 million USD at the worldwide box office. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.7/10 based on 195,000 votes, while its TMDB rating is 7/10 from 4,178 votes. Film critics gave the movie a rating of 6.7/10 from 324 reviews, matching the audience score on IMDb.
What's left behind the scenes
- Benedict Wong was cast in one of the roles, but he declined due to prior commitments, and Ken Watanabe was cast instead.
- While preparing to work on the film, director and screenwriter Gareth Edwards visited a virtual reality studio, where he saw a poster on the wall explaining the process of making films. Edwards asked why this poster with an explanation of elementary things was there, and was very surprised to hear in response that the poster was almost 100 years old. Edwards then decided to change the filming concept: without a green screen and focus on on-location filming, using smaller cameras, and using low-budget filmmaking methods, adding science fiction elements later.
- Gareth Edwards wrote the role specifically for John David Washington after seeing him in the thriller “Monsters and Men.”
- At the airport, on the "Departures" board, "Scarif" is listed as one of the final destinations. This was the name of one of the planets in Edwards' previous film – "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story".
