The Rookie
Short description
The Rookie is a 1990 American crime thriller about a veteran Los Angeles police detective, Nick Pulovski, who works cases involving stolen luxury cars. After his partner is killed while pursuing a car-theft ring, Pulovski is assigned a new partner: David Ackerman, a wealthy, university-educated rookie with no street experience and a troubled past. The two men clash over temperament and methods, but when their investigation into the gang's leader, Strom, goes wrong and Pulovski is taken captive, Ackerman is left to act on his own.
Clint Eastwood directed the film, the fourteenth of the forty features he has directed in chronological order, following Bird and preceding White Hunter, Black Heart. He also stars as Pulovski, with Charlie Sheen as Ackerman, Raúl Juliá as Strom, Sônia Braga as Liesl, Tom Skerritt as Eugene Ackerman and Lara Flynn Boyle as Sarah. The screenplay is by Scott Spiegel and Boaz Yakin, and the film was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures with Malpaso Productions.
Made for about 10 million dollars, the film took in roughly 22 million dollars worldwide at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 28,875 votes, and on TMDB it also has a 5.9 from 639 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10 from 15 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film was to be set in London, England, but plans changed over time. One of the script changes was replacing the phrase “Did you hear what this pathetic faggot just said about my car?” with “Did you hear what this fucking ‘faggot’ said about my car?”
- When Sarah sees the real Lieutenant Garcia on television, Loco changes the channel, and we see a giant tarantula crawling across the desert. This is a shot from the film *Tarantula* (1955). In this film, Clint Eastwood plays a minor role as a fighter pilot who attacks the spider. The shot used in *The Rookie* (1990) is right before the attack.
- During the fight scene between Sarah and Loco, two members of the film crew can be seen standing near the entrance door.
