Short description
Cady Heron, a teenager who has spent years being homeschooled in Africa, starts at a North American high school and is taken up by the Plastics, the school's dominant clique of popular girls led by Regina George, with Gretchen and Karen at her side. Cady's standing collapses when she develops feelings for Aaron Samuels, Regina's former boyfriend, and Regina turns against her. With two school outsiders, Janis and Damian, Cady works to bring Regina down, while trying to hold on to who she is.
The film is a musical take on the high school comedy, directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. It is the second feature for both directors in the chronological filmographies given here, following their 2015 debut Vanity. Tina Fey wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Lorne Michaels and Jeff Richmond. Angourie Rice plays Cady, Reneé Rapp plays Regina, and Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika Vandanapu and Bebe Wood fill out the main cast, part of a production with 141 credited cast members and 164 credited crew.
Made for a budget of 36 million USD, the film took in about 105 million USD worldwide, roughly three times its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.5/10 from around 41,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9/10 from 764 votes. A film critics' rating of 6.2/10 from 256 reviews places critics somewhat above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Duval is in a cast throughout the entire film. Tim Meadows, who played the role, actually broke his arm.
- Screenwriter Tina Fey wanted Rene Rapp to play Regina, but feared that Paramount Pictures executives might prefer someone else. To her relief, it turned out that the film company also saw Rapp in the role.
