Short description

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues the story of the blue hedgehog who has settled into life in the town of Green Hills. Eager to be taken seriously as a hero, he finds his chance when Dr. Robotnik returns from exile, this time with a powerful new ally, Knuckles the echidna. The two are hunting a mysterious emerald said to hold power capable of destroying entire civilizations. To stop them, Sonic joins forces with Tails, a young fox who becomes his partner, and the pair set out on a journey across the globe to reach the emerald first.

Jeff Fowler directed the film, his second Sonic feature, following Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020 and preceding Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in 2024 and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 in 2027. The screenplay comes from Josh Miller, Pat Casey and John Whittington, with Neal H. Moritz, Toru Nakahara and Toby Ascher producing. Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, James Marsden and Tika Sumpter play Tom and Maddie Wachowski, Colleen O'Shaughnessey voices Tails, Idris Elba voices Knuckles, and Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik. The production involved 79 credited cast members and 84 credited crew.

Made for about 110 million dollars, the film took roughly 405 million dollars worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 6.5/10 from about 115,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.4/10 from around 6,000 votes, so the audience response leans favourable. A film critics' rating of 6/10 from 182 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Idris Elba and the project's director, Jeff Fowler, discussed Knuckles’ voice and manner of speaking for some time. Knuckles is naturally taciturn, always speaking briefly and to the point. Elba initially suggested making his voice squeaky, but the proposal was rejected.
  • The film begins by showing Sonic standing on the roof of a high-rise building, looking at the police cars driving below – reminiscent of the “Chaos on City Square” level from the first Sonic the Hedgehog game. The police sirens in the film are practically identical to the sirens in the games.
  • According to Idris Elba (who voiced Knuckles), Knuckles' origin helped him come up with the character's vocal timbre and manner of speaking. He is a warrior of a tribe for whom English is not a native language. His sense of humor is not like Sonic's. He is a dispassionate character who always speaks to the point—simply to convey the essence and nothing more. He has no time for anything else.
