Royal Affairs in Versailles traces the history of the palace from its origins as a hunting lodge chosen by Louis XIII through its expansion under the autocratic Louis XIV and the reigns of his successors, down to the Revolution and beyond. The private lives and romantic entanglements of the monarchs and their courtiers form much of the story, which moves through episodes and portraits rather than a single continuous plot. A large ensemble plays the historical figures, who appear briefly as the narrative passes through the centuries.
Sacha Guitry directed and wrote the screenplay and also produced the film, and he appears as the older Louis XIV. The cast numbers 98 credited performers, among them Bourvil, Lana Marconi, Gaby Morlay, Gérard Philipe as D'Artagnan and Jean Marais as Louis XV. It followed several earlier Guitry features, including Quadrille, La Malibran and Toâ, and preceded his Napoleon two years later.
Released in December 1953, the film runs 167 minutes and was a co-production between France and Italy. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 32 votes, a modest figure that reflects a small number of viewers rather than broad consensus. The scale of the production, with its unusually large cast, matches the sweep of the subject it covers.
