The Mad Women's Ball

Set in late nineteenth-century Paris, The Mad Women's Ball centres on Eugénie, a young woman from a wealthy family who hears and sees the dead. When her relatives learn of her gift, her father and brother commit her to the neurological clinic at La Pitié-Salpêtrière, the hospital run by the neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, where women diagnosed as hysterical, mad or epileptic are kept. Eugénie's path crosses that of Geneviève, a nurse at the clinic, and their meeting alters both women's futures as the hospital prepares for the annual ball that Charcot stages for his patients. The film adapts Victoria Mas's novel Le Bal des folles.

Mélanie Laurent directs and writes the screenplay, her third feature after Breathe and Galveston. Lou de Laâge plays Eugénie, with Laurent herself as Geneviève, alongside Benjamin Voisin, Emmanuelle Bercot, Cédric Kahn and Lomane de Dietrich among a credited cast of twenty-three. The French production was made by Légende Films.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.7 from around 5,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.1 from roughly 366 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 58 reviews places it close to the audience score on TMDB, and well above the IMDb figure.
