Flee

Flee is an animated documentary about Amin, an Afghan refugee living in Denmark who is about to marry his longtime partner, Casper. Amin has never spoken openly about his past, and when he was younger he repeatedly invented reasons to travel abroad so he could disappear for a while. Now 36 and an established academic, he decides to tell his story, partly for the benefit of his old friend Jonas, who is a documentary filmmaker. Because Amin's identity must remain secret for his own safety, his account is presented through animation. The film follows him from his childhood in Kabul in the 1980s through his family's flight, which took them through Russia before he eventually reached Denmark and sought asylum as a teenager.

Jonas Poher Rasmussen directs and wrote the screenplay, with Signe Byrge Sørensen, Monica Hellstrøm and Charlotte de la Gournerie producing. Amin is voiced by the man himself, while Daniel Karimyar, Fardin Mijdzadeh, Milad Eskandari, Belal Faiz and Elaha Faiz give voice to younger versions of Amin and to members of his family. The production, a co-production across many countries, had a budget of about 3 million US dollars.

Audiences rate the film at 7.9 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 21,000 votes and 7.7 out of 10 on TMDB from just over 400 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 8.6 out of 10 from 198 reviews, a notably higher figure than either audience score.
