Athlete A

Athlete A examines how Larry Nassar, the physician attached to USA Gymnastics, abused young athletes over many years and how his conduct was eventually brought to light. The documentary centers on the gymnasts who came forward and on the investigative reporters at the Indianapolis Star whose work turned their accounts into a public scandal. It traces the response of the sport's governing bodies and the wider system that allowed the abuse to continue, drawing on interviews with former team members and journalists involved in the case.

The film is directed by Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk. It is Cohen's first feature as director and Shenk's second, following his 2001 making-of documentary about Star Wars Episode I; the pair went on to direct In Waves and War and The White House Effect. Julie Parker Benello, Serin Marshall and Jennifer Sey produced. Among those appearing are gymnast Maggie Nichols, former national team member Jamie Dantzscher, reporter Mark Alesia and Rachael Denhollander, alongside choreographer Géza Poszar and 1984 Olympian Tracee Talavera.

Released in June 2020, the documentary runs 105 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.6 from roughly 13,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 from close to 300 votes, indicating a generally favorable response from viewers across a large and a comparatively small sample.
