Deadfall follows Henry, a skilled jewel thief who partners with Richard and Fe Moreau to rob the chateau of a wealthy man named Salinas. Henry has spent time in a psychiatric hospital, and once he is recovered he returns to his old trade. The Moreaus are close to their wealthy target, which gives the scheme its opening, but Henry's growing attraction to Fe complicates matters. Richard, Fe's husband, carries secrets of his own that add further strain to the plan.
The British crime drama was released in 1968. Bryan Forbes directed from his own screenplay, and Paul Monash produced it. Michael Caine plays Henry, with Giovanna Ralli as Fe, Eric Portman as Moreau, and Nanette Newman, Vladek Sheybal and Emilio Rodríguez in supporting roles. The film belongs to a productive stretch of Forbes's career, arriving between King Rat and The Stepford Wives among the features he directed.
Audience reactions have been modest: on IMDb the film holds a rating of 5.7 from around 1,400 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.4 from a much smaller group of voters. Both figures point to a film that has remained a minor entry in its director's filmography and in Caine's early leading roles rather than one of the period's more widely embraced crime pictures.
