Mickey Barnes is a man in debt to dangerous people, so he signs on as a colonist bound for Niflheim, an ice-covered world. He ends up in a job few would accept: he is an expendable, a worker whose body is printed anew with his memories loaded in each time he dies on a hazardous assignment. After years on the colony, run by the megalomaniacal former senator Kenneth Marshall, Mickey has been through many such deaths. When one mission leaves him badly hurt, he is left for dead in a crevasse, survives with help from the planet's native creatures, and returns to the base to find that a replacement, Mickey 18, has already been made alongside him.

The film is an adaptation of Edward Ashton's novel, written and directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also produced it with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. It followed Parasite in his filmography and precedes Incoherence. Robert Pattinson plays Mickey, with Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette and Anamaria Vartolomei in supporting roles. Bong's largest production to date, it cost about 118 million dollars and returned roughly 134 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.7 from some 238,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.8 from about 4,000, both a little below the 7.1 critics' average from 362 reviews.
