Short description
Dual is a science fiction film set in a future where people can be cloned to spare their loved ones the pain of losing them. Sarah, diagnosed with a terminal illness, undergoes the procedure so that a duplicate of herself can take her place with her family and friends. When she unexpectedly recovers, she wants the clone decommissioned, but the request fails. Because the law does not allow the original and the copy to coexist, the matter ends in a court-ordered duel to the death, with Sarah facing an opponent built to be a better version of herself.
Riley Stearns wrote and directed the film, his fourth feature after Casque, Faults and The Art of Self-Defense. Karen Gillan plays Sarah, with Aaron Paul as Trent, Beulah Koale as Peter and Theo James as Robert Michaels. The production, a British, Canadian, American and Finnish co-production, had a budget of 5 million US dollars and runs 95 minutes.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from more than eleven thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 out of 10 from around four hundred votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 155 reviews places it close to the audience scores. The genre mix of comedy, drama, science fiction and thriller reflects the film's blend of dark humour and bleak premise.
What's left behind the scenes
- It is assumed that the action takes place in the USA, the main characters are also Americans, the cars on the streets are left-hand drive, and the license plates are indistinguishable. At the same time, the road signs on the streets are European. It is impossible to determine exactly the time period in which the film is set.
- Initially, Jesse Eisenberg, who played the lead in Riley Sterns' sports drama 'Art of Self-Defense' (2018), was cast in the film; however, due to scheduling conflicts, he left the project and was replaced by Theo James.
- Filming took place during the coronavirus pandemic. The Finnish city of Tampere was chosen as the filming location because the country's government had successfully managed the problems arising from the pandemic.
- During training, Karen Gillan hit Aaron Paul in the lower back twice. According to him, she hit his liver. However, the liver is actually located higher and closer to the front of the body, and the blow actually landed on his right kidney.
