Rising Sun

When a woman is found dead during a reception at a Japanese corporation's newly opened Los Angeles office building, the case falls to homicide detective Web Smith. He is paired with John Connor, a veteran with long experience of Japan, and the two work under pressure to establish what happened. Their inquiry is complicated by cultural differences and by the presence of a security recording that turns out to have been altered, pointing to a deliberate cover-up inside the company.

The film adapts Michael Crichton's novel, with Philip Kaufman directing from a screenplay he wrote with Crichton and Michael Backes. Sean Connery plays Connor and Wesley Snipes plays Smith, with Tia Carrere, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Harvey Keitel and Mako in supporting roles. Kaufman's seventh feature, it followed The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Henry & June among the ten films he has directed.

Made for 40 million US dollars, the film took about 107 million worldwide, a solid commercial result for a drama-thriller of its length. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 50,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 867 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 41 reviews places professional response below the audience scores.
