Short description

When a prostitute is found dead in a Los Angeles skyscraper occupied by a large Japanese corporation, detectives John Connor and Web Smith are called in to investigate. Although Connor has previous experience working in Japan, cultural differences make their progress difficult until a security disc showing the murder turns up. Close scrutiny proves the disc has been doctored, and the detectives realize they're dealing with a cover-up as well.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Michael Crichton, who wrote the novel on which the film was based and also co-wrote the screenplay, envisioned the character of Connor with Sean Connery in mind.
  • The book clearly showed anti-Japanese sentiment, but this had to be significantly toned down in the film because it was being made by a Hollywood studio with close corporate ties to Japan.
  • Eddie's red car is a Vector W8, an American-made vehicle.
  • The novel's author, Michael Crichton, and screenwriter Michael Bakes left the project due to disagreements with director Phillip Kaufman. The director insisted that the role of Lieutenant Smith be played by an African American. In the book, Detective Smith is white.
