Joe Barrett, an American veteran, returns to Tokyo after the Second World War hoping to rebuild the life he had there before the fighting. He once ran a nightclub called Tokyo Joe and was married to a Russian émigré, Trina, whom he believed had died. He learns that she is still alive, has married an American diplomat, and that he has a daughter.
Determined to win Trina back, Barrett instead becomes caught between criminals and the authorities. A would-be power broker, Baron Kimura, draws him into an extortion scheme involving a clandestine flight carrying fugitives back into the country, using what he knows about Trina's wartime activities to keep Barrett in line.
The film was directed by Stuart Heisler, its fourth feature in the chronological list of his work that includes The Glass Key, Blue Skies, this film, Chain Lightning and Storm Warning. It was written by Cyril Hume and Bertram Millhauser and produced by Robert Lord for Columbia Pictures and Santana Pictures. Humphrey Bogart plays Barrett, with Alexander Knox, Florence Marly, Sessue Hayakawa, Jerome Courtland and Gordon Jones among the thirty-one credited players. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 3,200 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.1 from a much smaller number of votes.
