Evil Dead Rise follows Beth, who travels to Los Angeles to visit her older sister Ellie, a single mother raising three children in an aging apartment building. Their reunion is interrupted when a mysterious book found within the building unleashes a demonic force that possesses the living, turning Ellie against her own family. Beth must protect her niece and nephew while confronting a nightmarish distortion of motherhood and family.
The film is directed and written by Lee Cronin, his second feature after The Hole in the Ground, and produced by Robert Tapert, a longtime collaborator on the Evil Dead series. Lily Sullivan plays Beth and Alyssa Sutherland plays Ellie, with Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols and Nell Fisher as the children. It was made for about 15 million dollars and became a considerable commercial success, taking in roughly 147 million dollars worldwide. The film sits within the wider Evil Dead franchise, though it centers on a new set of characters.
Reception was generally positive. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from about 166,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from around 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from 241 reviews places it somewhat above the audience score on IMDb.
