A Mouthful of Air

A Mouthful of Air centres on Julie Davis, a children's book author and illustrator whose stories are meant to help young readers face their fears. She is also a wife and a mother, and after the birth of her second child she is drawn into the vivid, brightly coloured world of her own drawings as a way of escaping the depression that closes in on her at home. The film follows her struggle to hold on to her family and herself while the past she has never confronted presses back into her life.

Amy Koppelman directed and wrote the screenplay, adapting her own novel, and the film was produced by Celine Rattray, Trudie Styler and Mike Harrop. It was released in 2021 and runs 105 minutes. Amanda Seyfried plays Julie, with Finn Wittrock as her husband Ethan, Britt Robertson as Rachel Davis, Jennifer Carpenter as Lucy, Paul Giamatti as Dr. Sylvester and Amy Irving as Bobbi Davis. Twenty-eight cast members and forty-two crew members are credited.

On IMDb the film holds 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 3,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 84 votes, so the two audiences broadly agree. A critics' rating of 6.4 out of 10 from 29 reviews places it close to the audience scores rather than sharply apart from them.
