Courageous follows a group of law enforcement officers, including Adam Mitchell and Nathan Hayes, who handle dangerous situations on the job with composure. At home, however, they face a challenge they are far less prepared for: being fathers. As their demanding work keeps them away, their children grow more distant, and when tragedy strikes close to them, the men are forced to confront their fears, their faith and their priorities. Their response shapes a decision that affects the whole direction of their lives.
The film was directed by Alex Kendrick, who also stars as Adam Mitchell, from a screenplay he wrote with Stephen Kendrick, who produced. It is the fourth film Kendrick directed chronologically, arriving after Flywheel, Facing the Giants and Fireproof, and ahead of War Room, Overcomer and The Forge. The cast includes Ken Bevel as Nathan Hayes, Kevin Downes as Shane Fuller, Renee Jewell, Rusty Martin and Lauren Etchells, among 121 credited performers.
Released in the United States on September 30, 2011, the drama runs 129 minutes. Made for about 1 million dollars, it took roughly 36 million dollars worldwide, a return far beyond its modest production cost. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from over 21,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.6 from a much smaller number of votes, suggesting a warmer response among that audience. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 22 reviews places it below both audience scores.
