The Gray Man
Short description
The Gray Man centres on Court Gentry, a CIA operative known by the code name Sierra Six, who is pulled out of a federal prison and recruited by his handler, Donald Fitzroy. After years of carrying out sanctioned killings for the agency, he turns on his employers when he uncovers damaging secrets about them. Branded a liability, he becomes the target of a worldwide manhunt led by Lloyd Hansen, a former CIA colleague with few scruples and a willingness to use any means to finish the job. Agent Dani Miranda, whose loyalties are not straightforward, ends up as an ally he depends on.
The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, working from a screenplay by Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely and Joe Russo. It is the eighth feature the brothers directed, arriving between Cherry and The Electric State. Ryan Gosling plays Six, with Chris Evans as Hansen, Ana de Armas as Miranda, Billy Bob Thornton as Fitzroy, Jessica Henwick as Suzanne Brewer and Dhanush as Avik San.
Released in July 2022, the production carried a budget of 200 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from around 270,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.9 from roughly 4,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.5 from 275 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Both Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans were constantly encouraged to improvise their lines. All the dialogue during their characters' first personal meeting was improvised.
- On the very first day of filming, Chris Evans accidentally hit Ryan Gosling in the face with a prop weapon.
- Initially, Chris Evans was considered for the role of the protagonist, but he turned it down in favor of the antagonist's role.
