A homeless man named Max Fist says he is a superhero from another dimension who fell through time and space and landed on Earth without his powers. Nobody takes his story seriously, though some people tolerate him for the tales he tells. A teenager called Hamster and his sister Indigo are the exception: they believe him enough to bring him into their plan to take on a local drug gang, setting up a confrontation in which Max's supposed abilities are put to a hard test. The gang's boss is known only as The Manager.
Archenemy is a 2020 American action, crime and science fiction film directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer, who wrote the screenplay with Lucas Passmore. Produced by Elijah Wood, Lisa Whalen and Daniel Noah, it runs 90 minutes and mixes live action with partly animated passages. Joe Manganiello plays Max Fist, with Skylan Brooks as Hamster, Zolee Griggs as Indigo, Glenn Howerton as The Manager, Paul Scheer as Krieg and Amy Seimetz as Cleo Ventrik.
It followed Mortimer's Daniel Isn't Real and Holidays, and preceded Pathetic Fallacy. The response was mixed but divided: a film critics' rating of 6.2 out of 10 from 54 reviews sits well above the audience scores, 5 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 3,900 votes and 5.2 out of 10 on TMDB from 144 votes.
