Johnny Cool centers on a Sicilian criminal who is sent to the United States to settle scores on behalf of a deported American gangster. The gangster, now based in Italy, has the younger man trained for the task, and the newcomer works his way into the American underworld while forming a relationship with a woman he meets there. The killings he carries out set off a cycle of retaliation.
The film was released in October 1963 and runs 103 minutes. It is a crime drama with thriller elements, produced by Chrislaw Productions in the United States. William Asher directed and produced it, working from a screenplay by Joseph Landon. It followed Asher's Beach Party, released earlier the same year, and was the second of the two films he directed in that period. Henry Silva leads as Johnny Cool, also known as Salvatore Giordano, opposite Elizabeth Montgomery as Darien Guiness. Richard Anderson, Jim Backus, Joey Bishop and Brad Dexter are among the credited cast of 31.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.4 from around 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 5.3 from 23 votes, indicating a smaller and more mixed audience sample there. The larger vote count on IMDb reflects a steadier level of viewer attention over the years.
