This documentary explores the aftermath of a 1999 avalanche on Mount Shishapangma in Tibet, which claimed the life of climber Alex Lowe and his colleague David Bridges. Following the tragedy, Lowe's climbing partner and close friend, Conrad Anker, married Lowe's widow and helped raise their three sons. Seventeen years later, the discovery of the bodies leads the family back to the remote mountain to recover their remains. Directed by the eldest son, Max Lowe, the film uses interviews, home movies, and archive footage from the original expedition to examine the family's journey toward closure and their experience with loss.
Torn is the first of two films directed by Max Lowe, preceding his 2026 work Learning to Fly. A joint production between the United States and Nepal, the project involved National Geographic, Lightbox Entertainment, and Wilderpeople Productions. The cast features Max, Sam, and Isaac Lowe, along with Jennifer Lowe and Conrad Anker, with Alex Lowe appearing through archival material. The film has been well received by viewers, earning a rating of 7.5/10 on IMDb from 2,200 votes and a 7/10 on TMDB based on 27 votes.
