Marisa Ventura, a single mother raising her son Ty in the Bronx, works as a room attendant at a luxury Manhattan hotel and hopes to move up. Christopher Marshall, a wealthy lawyer and Senate candidate from a political family, is staying at the hotel when a case of mistaken identity leads him to believe Marisa is a guest rather than a member of staff. A connection forms between them, but once her real job comes to light, the distance between their two worlds threatens the relationship.
Wayne Wang directed the film, which followed Anywhere but Here and The Center of the World in his filmography; Kevin Wade wrote the screenplay, and Paul Schiff, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Deborah Schindler produced it for Revolution Studios and Red Om Films. Jennifer Lopez plays Marisa, with Ralph Fiennes as Christopher, Natasha Richardson as Caroline Lane, Stanley Tucci as Jerry Siegel, Tyler Posey as Ty and Marissa Matrone as Stephanie Kehoe. The production had a budget of 55 million dollars and took in about 155 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost.
Reception was mixed. On IMDb the film holds 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 102,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.1 from about 2,093 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 from 148 reviews places professional opinion in much the same range as the larger audience sample.
